Ever have one of those projects that seems to take “forever”? One that feels super hard to get anywhere or on do anything meaningful with? I get it…I do too sometimes.
I’ve been working on this console / entryway table for what feels to be months on end now. In reality the compilation of actual time put into it is perhaps only a few days. Seriously, if I condense all the planning, prep, cuts, glue, sanding, building, thinking and other tidbits of time I’ve spent working on this it’s likely no more than a few days in total.
What makes it feel like months? It’s not months in reality but my perspective and that’s ultimately the purpose of my post here today.
Having perspective with woodworking, crafting projects and getting things finalized can be really important. It’s a struggle sometimes to feel as if a project is taking “forever” to complete when it’s something you’re excited about or think will turn out really cool as a finished piece.
Remembering priorities is critical though! I have to remind myself almost weekly these days that commissioned builds, customer projects and a variety of other things come first. A side project that sparked as an idea in my brain months ago (yes actual months this time) is something I work on only in small steps and tiny pockets of time here and there. This is always a challenge for me however as I more often have the mentality of “let’s do this NOW”.
I have to remind myself as I encourage all of my readers to do as well, slow down and practice patience when it comes to projects that aren’t at the forefront of your daily priorities. They’ll come to light just as you planned and the length of time can almost make the build journey even more worth the wait.
What helps you stay focused? What are your go to mental tips for staying on track with longer term projects?
