When a creative project is finally finished it can be a great feeling. All the planning, work and patience pays off. It’s the cherry on top!

On creative non commissioned pieces they sometimes take a back seat to other projects that have customers waiting or more specific deadlines. It’s simultaneously what makes them fun (there’s no set deadline) and at times challenging (there’s no set deadline). Occasionally without a set deadline a project can linger and be too easily pushed aside.

This was absolutely the case with this cherry butcher block / chop block style console table. I had a different vision all together for it’s base/legs, but that simply didn’t pan out as I would have hoped. The thickness of the table made some of the contours a challenge as my range of tools can have it’s limits at times.

However, looking back on this project journey I wouldn’t change a thing. It was a great process repurposing discarded cherry timber, gluing up all the pieces, seeing the thick “chunky” block come together and then filling in all the imperfections to final sand.

Another fun challenge and learning experience were the metal legs. Fabrication and fitment for those allowed me to explore new router skills, metal skills and I think they turned out pretty great.

This table is a functional work of art in my opinion and I really enjoyed the process along the way.

What project completions have felt the best to you recently? Mine often seem to be the ones I learn the most from 🙂
